Gamemode: Survival

There are many different gamemodes of Minecraft, including Survival, Creative, Adventure, and Spectator (only in versions higher than 1.8). This page tells you about Survival mode.

Survival mode is a gamemode in which the player has 10 hearts (20 health) and can take damage. (The amount of health taken away by damage is not specific.) If the health is depleted all the way, the player 'dies' and a screen will show up with options to either respawn or to go to the main menu.
In this mode, the player must harvest blocks to build a shelter. Night and day follow the same path as in the real world, but instead is 60 times shorter (each day is about 15 minutes in Minecraft). At night, creatures called monsters spawn in to the world (e.g. come to exist) such as Zombies, Creepers, Skeletons, and Spiders. These monsters are naturally attracted to players, and will deal damage if close enough.
