There are many different gamemodes of Minecraft, including Survival, Creative, Adventure, and Spectator (only in versions higher than 1.8). This page tells you about Adventure mode.
Adventure mode is basically the same as survival mode, except you can only break specific blocks with designated tools. For example, you can only break dirt with a shovel in this gamemode. If you are trying to do a good survival world, I would not recommend this mode, but if you need an extra challenge, go right ahead and use this mode.
